BONE : SEQUESTRUM

BONE : SEQUESTRUM

Clinical History

An 18 year old aboriginal boy presented with osteomyelitis of the left tibia. On X-ray a sequestrum was seen. This was removed at operation.

Pathology

The specimen is a large bone fragment which is irregular and is lined by haemorrhagic debris and some fibrous connective tissue. This is a piece of bone which has become separated off from the normal bone as the result of necrosis, probably on the basis of suppurative osteitis.
