BRANCHIAL CYST

Clinical History

The cyst was removed from the neck of a woman of 64. No other details are available.

Pathology

The specimen is an ovoid cyst 4.5 cm in maximum diameter sliced open to display the internal surface. The cyst is lined by yellow tissue which shows irregular trabeculation and variation in thickness. Some patchy haemorrhage is present. Histologically the cyst is lined by stratified squamous epithelium surrounded by lymphoid tissue. This is an example of a branchial cyst.
