ATHEROSCLEROSIS OF PULMONARY ARTERY

ATHEROSCLEROSIS OF PULMONARY ARTERY

Clinical History

A 57 year old man had mitral stenosis due to chronic rheumatic valvulitis. He died suddenly following a mitral valvotomy.

Pathology

The portion of lung is sliced to display the pulmonary artery and its branches. Prominent yellow atheromatous plaques are present in the pulmonary artery and smaller lesions are seen in the branches.

Note

Pulmonary atheroma only occurs in association with increased pulmonary arterial pressure, i.e. in association with pulmonary hypertension.
