Pathology

The specimen is a heart with the left ventricle laid open to display the aortic and mitral valves. The aortic valve cusps show large, friable haemorrhagic vegetations associated with ulcerative destruction of the valve cusps. The mitral valve is normal. There is slight left ventricular hypertrophy. This is a case of acute bacterial endocarditis.
